PROPERTIES OF ORGANIC COMPOUNDS

blah blah blah | 12:00 |
Properties of Organic compounds

  1. Catenation (Self linking property)
Ability of Carbon atom to combine with other Carbon atoms to form long chains ring structure is called Catenation.

  • Examples
Ethane , Propane , Butane , Cyclo hexane , Benzene , Cyclo butane.

2.Multiplicity (Ability of making multiple bonds)
Ability of Carbon atom to form multiple bonds.

  • Examples
Methane , Ethene , Ethyne .

     3.Nature of bond

Organic compounds are Covalent compounds in nature.

     4.Physical state
They exist in all the three states of matter.

  • Examples
  1. Gases
Methane , Ethane , Propane , Ethene , Ethyne.

      2.Liquids

Pentane , Benzene , Carbon tetrachloride.

       3,Solids

Sucrose , Glucose , Starch.

      5.Solubility
They are mostly insoluble in Water but are soluble in Organic solvents.

  • Examples (Organic solvents)
Tri chloro methane , Carbon tetra chloride , Ether , Alcohol , Benzene.

      6.Conductance
They are mostly poor or nonconductors of electricity.

      7.Combustibility
They have % of Carbon atoms therefore they are highly combustable and are used as Fuels.

      8.Volatility
They are highly Volatile in nature because there are very weak forces are present in their structure.

       9.Rate of reaction
Their rates of reactions are very slow because they completed in two steps which are Bond breaking and bond making.

       10.Complexity
They are very simple compounds but sometimes they become more complex.

  • Examples
Starch , Glycogen.
